Need same-day crowns in Orange County? CEREC technology can get you in and out the door.

Whether you need dental bridges, veneers, or any other restoration dentistry, CEREC helps us give you fast, precise, long lasting, and beautiful results!

Do you have missing, cracked, decayed, or chipped teeth? If you want to get crowns put on your teeth quickly and efficiently, then Brian Toorani, DDS, and his team at the Dental Oasis of Orange County are ready to help. You may be wondering how same-day crowns are even possible, and the answer is “CEREC technology.”

What is CEREC technology?

CEREC stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics”; sometimes it stands for Ceramic REConstruction. It is the most used computer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) device around the globe for ceramic restorations in dental offices. The technology was first developed in the 80s by Dr. Marco Brandestini and Professor Werner H. Mormann in Zurich.

Although you may be looking to get same-day crowns, CEREC can be used to also create veneers, onlays, and inlays in one visit. Patients are often happy to avoid temporary appliances and to have metal-free restorations instead! The technology can be applied to orthodontia and implantology as well. And since 2009, the CEREC device has been improved upon–now it uses short-wave blue light technology to make the restoration cuts more precise.

Besides Getting in and Out of the Office Quickly, What Are Some Other Benefits?

  • CEREC machines can cut and burr lots of different materials
  • They can use ceramic, so the restorations are much more biocompatible than materials like gold or amalgam
  • The machine’s algorithms can shape prosthetics with pinpoint precision
  • The software is easy to use, so dentists don’t have to struggle with it
  • The prosthetics are very aesthetically pleasing since they can be cut to look just like your natural teeth
  • They have a high success rate between 85% and 95%. In fact, a study from “Operative Dentistry” showed that CEREC restorations had survival rates that were comparable to gold-cast restorations
  • They create durable prosthetics so you know you aren’t throwing away money
  • They allow you to take digital impressions, which are obviously more comfortable than algenate
  • Since the machines work quickly, you can save money by only coming for one appointment

If you aren’t convinced by the benefits, the NCBI shared a study that confirmed some of them. For example, CEREC was mostly able to create durable restorations within one visit. The study also showed that using CEREC minimized not only the procedure’s expenses but the discomfort a patient may feel on average. The main drawback of the study was the length of adhesive prep and impressions.

Another clear drawback is the limitations of technology compared to the expertise of a ceramist. Although the machinery can make a precise fit, dental technicians have years of experience creating prosthetics that sit comfortably in each patient’s mouth. However, this technology is continually improving and evolving.

One journal abstract says that this technology isn’t going anywhere. As long as dentists have a good working knowledge of adhesive bonding and plan the procedure well, CEREC technology can be incredibly helpful in a Huntington Beach, CA dentistry office.

Can Anyone Get Restorations with CEREC?

Almost anyone can get restorations with CEREC if they are in good health. Again, CEREC can be used not only for same-day crowns, but for inlays, onlays, bridges, and the like. But if you have a serious health condition, such as recovering from a recent stroke, you’ll most likely need to wait.

And if you need to be put under for a specific restoration, and you know that you don’t do well with anesthesia, you may need to consider alternative options.

Lastly, if your tooth can be restored with a less-invasive method, your dentist most likely won’t recommend CEREC. For instance, if you only need a filling, there’s no good reason to shave your tooth to prepare for a same-day crown.

How Does a Procedure with CEREC Technology Work?

  1. You will be numbed and your tooth may be shaved down so that the crown can fit over it.
  2. The dentist will take a gliding camera to create a digital scan of your teeth
  3. This scan is inputted into CEREC machine, where a 3-D model is created.
  4. From the 3-D scan, the software will create a model of needed restoration shape
  5. Your dentist will then use the CAD software to refine the restoration shape
  6. Once the model is ready, the dentist will insert a ceramic block into the CEREC machine’s milling unit. And since hand-made prostheses can be made out of a combination of materials, it’s difficult to sometimes get a uniform look–but CEREC cut restorations are made from one block, so they are uniform in their color.
  7. The milling machine will use diamond-head cutters to precisely cut the block in as little as 5 to 15 minutes
  8. The restoration is removed from the CEREC machine and fitted in the patient’s mouth
  9. If the restoration is a good fit, then the dentist will bond it to prepared tooth

What Kinds of Ceramics are Used?

Silicate ceramics (glass and felspar) are considered to be the most ideal materials for crowns, as well as veneers, onlays, and inlays for your teeth in the front. These materials don’t have terribly great flexibility, but they are translucent–like natural-looking teeth–and they are durable. If you need restorations for your premolars and molars, then oxide ceramic is often used. Oxide ceramics are also good for bridge frameworks.

I am thrilled that I found a wonderful dentist in Dr. Toorani and his team.

The office is aptly named. It really does look like a spa and is full of the latest gadgets in dentistry. It is located in the Bella Terra shopping center upstairs next to Bed, Bath & Beyond and right next to a Cost Plus. The location is easy to get in and out of and there is a parking garage if you are trying to avoid the often crowded parking lot.

Dr. Toorani is working on closing my open bite and alleviating some of my jaw pain so that I can avoid jaw surgery.

He is honest, fair and friendly. I would highly recommend Dental Oasis of Orange County to anyone in the market for a new dentist.
