Why Orange County Residents With Missing Teeth Shouldn’t Dismiss Dental Bridges
Brian Toorani, DDS and his team at the Dental Oasis of Orange County are dedicated to providing the best dental care available. Specializing in cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Toorani, a graduate of the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, understands the seriousness of tooth loss. When you lose one or more teeth, it is very common for your remaining teeth to shift in the mouth, causing gaps and discomfort that can lead to more serious complications.
Luckily, the Dental Oasis of Orange County has multiple preventative solutions to these problems, including the installation of bridges. Dental Bridges are fixed appliances that use crowns (or caps) on your natural teeth to anchor false teeth, which fill in any neighboring gaps. If your cheeks have a sunken appearance, bridges can help restore your former face shape and smile. While you may be eager about the cosmetic benefits, vital functions, like speaking clearly and chewing comfortably, will also be restored. Bridges are an excellent alternative to dental implants when it comes to replacing multiple teeth.
So why would I get bridges if I can get a dental implant?
You may be wary to even consider a bridge since so many dental websites have inundated their pages with the benefits of dental implants. And while it is true that implants are more durable and easier to clean, they do have some drawbacks. For one thing, dental implants are often considered to be a cosmetic treatment by insurers, this means that you may have to pay out of pocket.
Bridges, on the other hand, are often covered by insurers since it is a very common procedure that even general dentists can provide. And Cost Helper says that while lower-end bridge appliances can cost a couple hundred dollars, dental implants can cost thousands of dollars, and that’s not including additional procedures, such as sinus lifts, extractions, bone grafts, etc., that may be necessary for the implant to take. Furthermore, if you have any contraindications that make it difficult for you to recover well after surgeries, there is a chance that your implant could fail. A failing implant is not easy to replace, but bridges can be swapped out quickly and without too much discomfort if a piece of the appliance breaks. Also, dental implants can take months (or even over a year if you need grafts) but bridges can be installed over the course of a few weeks. And if you have teeth with lots of fillings that will probably need crowns anyway, it may make more sense for you to let a dentist fill in neighboring gaps with a bridge.
You may be convinced by the previous benefits but are still understandably concerned about natural-looking bridges. There is no reason why an expert dental technician can’t imitate the natural color, natural translucency, and shape of your missing teeth. If you are looking for a dentist in Huntington Beach, CA, Dr. Toorani is a great option since he specializes in cosmetic dentistry, is a CEREC specialist, and has a better understanding of the intricacies of tooth aesthetics than a general dentist would.
Get your money’s worth and protect your investment
While dental implants are well-known for their longevity, bridges can actually last for decades if they are well cared for. They are made of durable materials, like porcelain, ceramics, and metals; but, the reason they can break down is because patients don’t adequately clean under the pontic, or “dummy tooth,” between the crowns. However, there are special flossing tools (e.g. proxy brush) and toothpaste on the market that you can purchase to prevent a buildup of debris and decay. If you used to enjoy chewing harder substances, like crushed ice, now’s a good time to break that habit if you want the bridge to last. A good diet filled with leafy greens and regular dental cleanings can both go a long way in increasing the lifespan of your bridge.
Getting the right fit: different kinds of dental bridges
What kind of bridge you are fitted with will depend on the placement and number of gaps. A traditional bridge has two crowns on each end and a dummy tooth (or dummy teeth) in-between to cover a gap. This is a great option if your teeth have lots of fillings or are worn-down or if you are missing multiple teeth. The dentist can place crowns on top of the worn teeth, while also covering the gap. Another kind of bridge is Maryland-bonded bridges. They consist of one false tooth with metal wings. The dentist will use an adhesive on the metal wings so that they seal to the backsides of your teeth. Because patients don’t want to see the metal wings, Maryland bridges are usually only recommended to patients with one gap in the front, so that the wings are hidden behind the teeth. The last bridge is called a Cantilever bridge. These are mainly used when you only have natural teeth to one side of your gaps. Since these bridges can’t withstand a ton of pressure, they are not recommended for molars.
What to expect when you go into your appointment
Before you can have a bridge installed, your teeth will be filed down to make room for the bridge, much like what would be done during a crown installation. After the tooth has been made smaller, an impression will be taken and the bridge will be made using that mold. Your dentist will determine the color and material for the bridge, to make sure it will meet the needs of the teeth in that area of the mouth. You will usually leave with a temporary bridge until a permanent one can be made. When it is ready, it is important that you work with the dentist to make sure it is comfortable and secure.

I am thrilled that I found a wonderful dentist in Dr. Toorani and his team.
The office is aptly named. It really does look like a spa and is full of the latest gadgets in dentistry. It is located in the Bella Terra shopping center upstairs next to Bed, Bath & Beyond and right next to a Cost Plus. The location is easy to get in and out of and there is a parking garage if you are trying to avoid the often crowded parking lot.
Dr. Toorani is working on closing my open bite and alleviating some of my jaw pain so that I can avoid jaw surgery.
