When The Removal Of Teeth Is Necessary: Why Orange County Residents May Need Tooth Extractions

Extracting a tooth is something most people dread. If the procedure is not done properly, it can be a very painful experience. But at the Dental Oasis of Orange County, you are in the capable hands of Brian Toorani, DDS, a graduate of the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. An experienced professional, Dr. Toorani is dedicated to your comfort and happiness, even through a procedure such as having a tooth pulled.

Dental Oasis offers tooth extractions

When would you need–or even want–to remove a tooth?

There are many reasons why one would have a tooth pulled. Sometimes it’s necessary in order to allow braces to fit properly or to make room for new teeth to come in. For instance, some dentists recommend pulling a tooth as part of their interceptive orthodontic methods. Interceptive orthodontics are early treatments for children that help their permanent teeth come in correctly so they don’t need extensive orthodontics later on.

You may also need to extract a tooth if it is causing gum decay, tooth decay, infections, pain, and swelling around your gum socket. Before a full extraction, however, a dentist will do everything in his or her power to save the integrity of the tooth. For instance, root canals, crowns, scaling/root planing, etc. are all options that you should ask about before jumping straight to an extraction.

If you have an impacted tooth or one that hasn’t fully erupted from the gums, it cannot only be painful, but it can cause malocclusions, and it can even spur serious issues like decay and gum disease. The most commonly impacted teeth are wisdom teeth, or the final set of molars in the back of your mouth. If your gum line becomes crowded, as happens frequently when wisdom teeth start to grow, you may choose to remove them if it’s causing pain or discomfort.

The tooth extraction experience isn’t as nerve-racking as you think

As you can see, there are many sound reasons for tooth extractions. If you decide that it would be beneficial, you should familiarize yourself with the basic steps:

  1. You will be put under a local anesthetic.
  2. The dentist will take forceps and loosen your tooth.
  3. Once the tooth is loose, the dentist will extract it from your gums.

It’s that easy. As with any tooth extraction procedure at the Dental Oasis, having your teeth pulled doesn’t have to be painful. Dr. Toorani’s experience has given him the know-how and the ability to extract teeth with minimal pain. However, if you need to have an impacted tooth extracted–like wisdom teeth–that takes a bit more work.

Why do we even have wisdom teeth if most are extracted?

Anthropologists believe that wisdom teeth are vestigial, meaning that our ancestors used them to grind foraged plants; but, due to evolution, they have lost their purpose and function. Skulls of ancient humans could accommodate wisdom teeth, but as diets changed, smaller jaws evolved as well. And according to Live Science, some people may not even get wisdom teeth due to gene mutations!

However, despite the evolutionary perspective, some dentists–like Weston Andrew Price, the founder of the National Dental Association–conducted research that showed that wisdom teeth may not actually fit due to the poor nutrition of a mother and father months before conception. Price focused on holistic health and believed that wisdom teeth didn’t have to be extracted since palate-expanders could correct improperly growing jaws of children.

To remove, or not to remove wisdom teeth?

If you don’t even have wisdom teeth, this question is a no-brainer, but those with wisdom teeth actually have an option to keep their teeth if they wish.

If the dentist says that your wisdom teeth won’t cause crowding or any other problems, you don’t necessarily need extractions. However, many dentists recommend removing them anyway since these molars are very hard to clean and can develop cavities easily.

If you opt for extracting your wisdom teeth, you’ll want to know what you’re in for.

Having your wisdom teeth removed is a procedure that is essential to prevent pain and discomfort in the future. Most people opt to have their wisdom teeth removed before their thirties since they erupt between the ages of seventeen and twenty.

Again, the removal of wisdom teeth is a little different from other tooth extractions. During the procedure, you will be completely unconscious. At the Dental Oasis in Huntington Beach, CA, you have the option of having only one wisdom tooth removed or having all four removed. The basic procedure is as follows,

  1. You will be put under general anesthesia.
  2. A small incision will be made in the gum of the wisdom tooth socket to expose the tooth and bone.
  3. The dentist may choose to divide your tooth into sections to make it easier to remove.
  4. The tooth and root will be extracted.
  5. Your teeth will be cleaned.
  6. You may receive stitches to prevent heavy bleeding.
  7. Cotton gauze will be placed on the site of extraction to help stop bleeding and to promote clotting.
  8. You may receive an ice pack to help the pain in your jaw.

Like other tooth extractions, this surgery will only take one appointment. However, you will need someone to drive you home since you will be groggy. Your dentist will also provide you with a list of soft foods you can eat and instructions on how to clean your teeth while you heal.

While the procedure is very safe, some people may even face the problem of having dry sockets, which can lead to infection or bleeding in the future.

If you are prone to dry sockets, they will usually develop a few days after surgery. If the blood clot over your wound dissolves or is accidentally dislodged before full healing, your nerves and bone could be exposed to bacteria. You’ll need to call the dentist for further instruction if this happens. In the meantime, flushing the area with water and taking analgesics should prevent any other complications.

Dental Oasis Of Orange County is located at

I am thrilled that I found a wonderful dentist in Dr. Toorani and his team.

The office is aptly named. It really does look like a spa and is full of the latest gadgets in dentistry. It is located in the Bella Terra shopping center upstairs next to Bed, Bath & Beyond and right next to a Cost Plus. The location is easy to get in and out of and there is a parking garage if you are trying to avoid the often crowded parking lot.

Dr. Toorani is working on closing my open bite and alleviating some of my jaw pain so that I can avoid jaw surgery.

He is honest, fair and friendly. I would highly recommend Dental Oasis of Orange County to anyone in the market for a new dentist.
