Why Going to
a Orange County Dentist for Routine Teeth Cleaning Is So Important
Everyone wants a great smile, but brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash aren?t always enough to maintain a set of pearly whites. Even though these daily habits are important and do remove cavity-causing plaque, you should also have routine teeth cleaning to get the stuff that your toothbrush leaves behind. It is recommended that you get a routine cleaning at least once a year.
At the Dental Oasis of Orange County, Dr. Brian Toorani, a CEREC specialist and a mentor for the Scottsdale Center of Dentistry, promotes minimalist dental restorations and excellent oral hygiene. Ever since graduating from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, he has helped many people gain the confidence and security that comes with a great smile. If you?ve been putting off a visit to a Huntington Beach dentist, like Dr. Toorani, take a look at why routine teeth cleanings are so important.
Why should I get a professional cleaning if I brush and floss religiously?
Even if you are great about brushing and flossing daily, it?s a gross and unfortunate fact that a colorless, sticky substance called plaque can begin to form just four hours after your cleaning. After months of eating and drinking, home cleaning is just not enough: food debris can get stuck and sugary acids can eat away at the enamel, thereby causing plaque to build up. These minute pieces of food are very hard to get rid of and, if they?re not removed, they can cause permanent holes, known as cavities or dental caries, in tooth structures.
While brushing and flossing twice a day can certainly prevent plaque, it cannot completely remove calculus or tartar. Tartar is a hardened plaque that is made up of dead bacterial cells and minerals from saliva.
There are two types of tartar: supragingival calculus and subgingival calculus. The first kind occurs on the top of your enamel, and you may even be able to see it since it can have a brownish or yellowish color. The second kind of tartar cannot be seen since it can build up below the gums. While tarter of any kind isn?t going to be great for your dental health, subgingival tartar is a little more concerning since it can cause periodontal issues by forming pockets in your gums! Since you cannot completely remove tartar on your own, that?s where your dentist comes into play, since he or she can remove both kinds.
Besides removing tartar, are there any hidden benefits of routine teeth cleaning?
There are most definitely benefits to be reaped for all ages. For instance, while you may not think that babies and young children need routine cleanings since their milk teeth fall out, taking your child in for
While young children can benefit from routine cleanings, these check-ups will become increasingly important as you get older. For example, some seniors? bones are more brittle, so weak jaw bones and tooth loss are more frequent–especially if you don?t take care of them. Because seniors have a long lifetime of natural wear and tear on their teeth, they may also have more stains on the enamel that can only be taken care of by a dentist.
Lastly, many elderly individuals may be taking medications or suffering from conditions that cause dry mouth as a side effect. Because saliva is the mouth?s natural cleanser, having less of it means that you may be prone to more serious dental issues. While a change to your lifestyle and medications can certainly improve dry mouth, having a dental cleaning more often can help those who are unable to escape the pesky condition.
Believe it or not, there are even more benefits
While the previous benefits illustrate how regular cleanings positively affect your teeth and their surrounding structures, you may be surprised just how much your daily oral habits affect your health.
For instance, a survey conducted in Scotland found that those with poor oral hygiene were at an increased risk for not only mild inflammation but for cardiovascular disease! However, while the study did account for many different factors (like obesity and a predisposed family history), there seems to only be a correlation but no firm causation. Still, if you know you have a higher risk for heart disease, you may want to err on the safe side with your check-ups and find a dentist in Huntington Beach, CA who you are comfortable with and knows your concerns.
According to Diabetes Self-Management, those with diabetes need to be even more stringent in their oral habits and dental appointments since gum disease and diabetes have the nasty cyclical nature of making each other worse. Both cause inflammation and major complications, again, like heart disease.
You may wonder how a dentist could help diabetes, and the key is helping the gum disease. While some routine visits only focus on fluoride treatments, x-rays, and the like, you can ask your dentist to use a periodontal probe to check for pockets in your gums. If you and your dentist monitor your gums, you?ll have a better handle on both your diabetes and your oral health.
Okay, I understand that teeth cleanings are important, but I?m not a fan of the dentist
If you are convinced by the benefits but are still hesitant to have cleanings due to anxiety, you?re not alone. Some dentists even have sedation dentistry options for patients like you. At the Dental Oasis of Orange County, the offices are even outfitted to encourage a soothing environment. While each office conducts its check-ups a little differently, familiarizing yourself with the basics can help you prepare for your appointment:
- The dentist will remove tartar, calculus, or plaque from the surface of your teeth and from the areas between your teeth.
- An ultrasonic instrument utilizes vibrations to loosen bigger pieces of tartar from your teeth.
- A cool mist is used to rinse the teeth.
- Your teeth will then be polished with a brush and a gritty toothpaste (Prophylaxis paste) to make them shine.
- After your teeth are shiny and smooth, the dentist will apply a flavored fluoride onto a plastic tray that you will then hold between your teeth. This helps to strengthen your teeth.
As you can see, a basic treatment requires no anesthetic and can be completed in one visit. If the dentist does need to fill some cavities, he or she won?t proceed without your permission. At the Dental Oasis of Orange County, a skilled professional such as Dr. Toorani will carefully clean your teeth and remove tartar within a painless, comfortable way. During the cleaning, all you will feel is a mist and a slight tickle of the instruments. If you are still uncomfortable with the basic steps or the idea of having your teeth scraped, there is also an option to have a numbing gel applied to your gums so you won?t feel a thing!
