Emergency Dentistry in Huntington Beach, CA

No one plans on needing emergency dental care, but it's nice knowing that emergency care is available if you need it. At Dental Oasis of Orange County, we understand that emergencies don't happen on schedule, and that's why we're here for our patients when they need us most with urgent care during dental emergencies.

When Do You Need Emergency Dental Care?

In addition to uncontrolled bleeding, sudden and severe swelling, and/or severe and persistent oral pain, the following situations require immediate medical attention:

  • Severe Toothache - Pain is the body's way of notifying the brain that something is wrong. If you have a toothache that won't go away or severe oral pain, you should get immediate care.
  • Avulsed Tooth - An avulsed (knocked-out) tooth is a dental emergency. If your tooth is knocked out, do not touch it by the roots or rinse it in water. If you can, place it back in its socket in the gums, but do not force it in. If you can't return it to its place, hold it between your cheek and gums on your way to the dentist's office. A tooth that is not knocked out but is shifted out of place as a result of an injury is also an emergency.
  • Broken or Chipped Tooth - A severely chipped or broken tooth is an emergency because it puts the tooth at risk of infection.
  • Abscessed Tooth - An abscess is a serious bacterial infection. If left untreated with antibiotics and sterilization, it can be life threatening.
  • Lost Dental Crown or Filling - A lost crown or filling leaves a tooth severely weakened and at risk of infection.
  • Post-Surgical or Extraction Complications - Any signs of infection, uncontrolled bleeding, severe swelling, or a dry socket require immediate attention.

Do You Need Urgent Dental Care or Can You Wait?

If you're experiencing any of the above-listed issues or have uncontrolled bleeding, severe swelling, persistent pain, or infection, then you should seek immediate treatment. If you still aren't sure whether or not your situation can wait, we encourage you to contact our office in Huntington Beach. While we usually recommend erring on the side of caution, we can talk with you about your symptoms and help you determine whether you are having a dental emergency. We'll provide you with instructions for at-home care and help you get the treatment you need as soon as possible.

At-Home Remedies for Dental Pain and Problems

While emergencies require immediate care to avoid complications, some situations can wait. In these instances, patients can take action at home to alleviate pain and discomfort while safeguarding their oral health.

We recommend using over-the-counter, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications to address pain and reduce swelling. Additionally, topical dental gels can also provide relief from a toothache. If you are experiencing swelling, you can also keep your head elevated and apply a cold compress to your cheek.

For lost dental fillings or caps, we recommend using over-the-counter dental cement/putty to seal your tooth and protect it from infection.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies

While you can't prevent all accidents from happening, you can reduce your risk of experiencing a dental emergency by protecting your teeth.

  • Never use your teeth as tools (to open packaging or cut any material)
  • Wear a mouthguard during sports and athletic activities (especially, those that involve balls, sticks, impacts, or fall risks)
  • Avoid chewing on ice, hard candy, extremely sticky foods, or hard objects
