How Would Invisalign® Help Your Teen?

Whether or not we are a parent, every adult understands the struggle of wearing braces. Even when you are working to better your smile, it is not always the best – or most comfortable – look. Luckily, there are more comfortable, and more discreet, ways to help your teeth brighten their smile. But what is Invisalign® and what are the benefits in comparison to more relaxed, and typically more affordable, braces?

There are a few different types of braces. Most notably, people think of traditional braces with metal brackets or those with ceramic or porcelain brackets. Metal braces are the most noticeable, while ceramic braces sit on the inside of your teeth, just as lingual braces do, although these are metal instead of ceramic. However, they are not as comfortable as other types of braces, such as self-ligating braces, which do not use the elastic that metal or ceramic braces use. Even with that benefit, though, self-ligating braces have some feel brackets that are more prominent, and this is often comfortable.

Invisalign® is a method of straightening teeth that is different from traditional metal braces in that there are no metallic structures or retainers necessary for its use. Invisalign® is a transparent, BPA-free orthodontic device that is used for a length of time to straighten your teeth. Each device is customized to your teen’s teeth, and Invisalign® braces are matched precisely to teeth for a tight fit, conforming to each crevice on the upper and lower jaw. It is the fourth type of braces for your teeth, the removable tooth aligner, which means getting fitted every two weeks with anywhere from 18 to 30 custom aligners.

What are the advantages to choosing Invisalign® for your teen?

  • More Comfortable Than Traditional Braces
  • Easier to Remove When Eating – Nothing Gets Stuck!
  • Barely Noticeable – Or Not At All
  • Shorter Period of Use
  • Will Not Obscure Speech

While the experienced dental team at Dental Oasis will help you choose which type of braces are best for your teeth, there are many advantages to choosing Invisalign® for your teen rather than more traditional braces.

One of the disadvantages to Invisalign® for some parents is the price, but the benefits far outweigh the cost. Not only does Invisalign® potentially take half the time of the traditional braces, it is easier for teens to care their teeth, eat properly, and feel comfortable with these teeth aligners.

The Struggle of An Uneven Smile

Especially as we are learning about the world and growing as people, i.e., our teenage years, it can be difficult to function if our teeth are not straight or there are other dental issues causing pain and discomfort. When you visit your dentist to ask about braces, you will learn that there are three classes of tooth malalignment:

  • Class I: Crowding or spacing possible, but considered ideal and does not necessarily need braces but for cosmetic reasons.
  • Class II: The common issue is an overbite; the upper jaw protrudes forward, and the molar is misaligned.
  • Class III: The common issue is an underbite; the lower jaw juts forward while the lower first molar is nearer to the front of the mouth.

When your teeth aren’t straight, it is much more than a confidence issue – it can adversely affect your health. Often, people choose braces for their teeth to aid in the correction of misaligned teeth or an incorrect bite (underbite or overbite). There are several negative symptoms of misaligned teeth,

  • Speech impediment
  • Difficulty Eating or Chewing
  • Grinding or Clenching of Teeth
  • Jaw or Mouth Pain
  • Gum Disease or Tooth Decay

It is important to ask your dentist about braces if the issue is weighing on your mind or causing health problems in your daily life. Regardless of your reason, you may qualify for traditional braces or Invisalign braces and change your life for the better.

Like traditional braces, dental insurance plans will work toward covering Invisalign®. If your insurance plan does not cover enough of the entire procedure, Dental Oasis of Orange County offers payment plans and financing options for teens who need Invisalign®.

Does My Teen Qualify for Invisalign®?

When you and your teen schedule the initial consultation for Invisalign®, you will learn more about whether Invisalign® is the best option for them. For patients with mild to moderate misalignment, or those using it for cosmetic reasons, may see incredible results. However, those with severe malocclusions, there may need for traditional braces after the use of Invisalign®. Speak to Dr. Toorani and his staff to learn more.

How Does the Invisalign® Process Work?

After you’ve consulted with your dentist about Invisalign®, your teen will be fitted for Invisalign® aligners. This process includes digital x-rays, 3D images, and mold impressions to make sure they fit perfectly and work properly. Your teen will also find out during this fitting about how long they should wear Invisalign® aligners. They are replaced every two weeks on average, but it can differ between patients.
